YBP (Young Basketball Prospects) Basketball Academy is a basketball programme training at DIS (Deira International School) in Dubai Festival City. It describes itself as a "modular based elite development program", built on the idea that a couple of hours a week at school is not enough for a young player who wants to get really good. Training is organised around six modules: skills, strength and conditioning, mindset, analysis, competition and pathways. Its academy page lists two practices, Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm and Sunday from 12pm to 1.30pm, at intermediate level, with games every weekend. On the enrolment form there are two Dubai groups: YBP Development for under 13s and YBP Elite for over 14s. The coaching team listed on the site includes former professional players, among them a 2022 England 3x3 Commonwealth Games gold medallist. YBP also runs a paid after-school basketball club at DESS Academic City for that school's own pupils. New players can ask for a free trial through the website.

The activity

Basketball, explained

Basketball is a fast team game played five-a-side on an indoor court, where players dribble, pass and shoot to score through a hoop. Young players start with the basics: ball handling, footwork, passing and a simple shooting action, then move on to team play, defence and reading the game. It builds coordination, speed, stamina and confidence, and because everyone attacks and defends, children learn quickly to talk to teammates and make decisions under pressure. Many children start around age 6 to 8 with lower hoops and smaller balls, and club training usually adds weekend games once players know the rules.

Who it's for

Young players who are serious about basketball. The enrolment form lists YBP Development (under 13s) and YBP Elite (over 14s) in Dubai, and the academy page lists the Festival City sessions as intermediate level. The DESS Academic City after-school club is for Years 3 to 6 at that school only. The form is open to boys and girls. Ask the provider which group suits a beginner.

What to expect

Academy practices at DIS in Festival City run for 90 minutes (Friday 7pm to 8.30pm, Sunday 12pm to 1.30pm), with games at weekends. The site offers a free trial: you fill in the contact form with the player's age, your nearest area and a number, and the academy gets back to you. The enrolment form asks for the player's recent school or club team, position, ability level, shirt size and any medical conditions, so be ready with those. Kit, fees and what the trial session involves are not on the site: ask the provider.
