Music Lessons, explained

Private music lessons pair a child with one teacher who shapes each lesson around their voice or instrument, whether that is piano, singing or guitar. Children work on technique, reading music, listening skills and pieces they enjoy, then practise at home between lessons. Many families follow a graded exam pathway, such as Trinity College London grades, which gives a clear, recognised marker of progress from the first grade upwards. Group formats like choir or band add the fun of making music with others and performing on stage. The right starting age depends on the child and the instrument, so it is worth asking the teacher before booking.

Who it's for

Children, teens and adults learning piano, singing or guitar, from complete beginners to advanced players, including students preparing for Trinity College London graded exams. Group sessions in band, choir and speech & drama run in groups of 4-6 students. No minimum starting age is published - ask the provider.

What to expect

Private lessons last 50 minutes and are billed per term: 15 lessons in Term 1 (September-December), 13 in Term 2 (January-April) and 12 in Term 3 (April-June). Beginner & Foundation and Intermediate & Advanced students also get ten enhancement sessions per term, a programme on skills such as sight reading, theory and aural skills, or performing. The studio invites new singing and guitar students to book a trial lesson; ask the provider about the cost and what it covers. Up to two make-up lessons per term are considered with at least 24 hours' notice, and late arrivals are taught for the remaining time only.
