Team Yousfi is a Muay Thai and fitness academy with a branch in Marina Scape Mall (Shop 12) in Dubai Marina, and a second one in Business Bay. It is mainly an adult fight gym, but it runs a Kids' Academy that the club describes as "age-appropriate training" and "character building" in a safe environment. At the Dubai Marina branch, the timetable on the club's website shows Kids Muay-Thai on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4:30PM, followed by Teens Muay-Thai at 5:30PM on the same days, with adult classes in the mornings and evenings. The academy was founded by Amin Yousfi, whom the club describes as a Muay Thai World Champion and six-time National Champion. The club says every class includes a warm-up, technique training, pad work and a cool-down. The Marina gym has heavy bags, speed bags and Thai pads, changing rooms with lockers, and showers. Ages for the kids' and teens' groups, and prices, are not published, so ask the club before you book.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Muay Thai is Thailand's national combat sport, often called the art of eight limbs because it uses punches, kicks, elbows and knees. In a children's class the focus is on technique rather than contact: kids warm up, practise stance and footwork, learn to kick and punch on bags and pads held by a coach, and play partner drills and games. Done well, it builds fitness, coordination, balance and confidence, and the bowing, listening and turn-taking teach respect and self-control. Sparring for children is usually light and supervised, if it happens at all. Starting ages vary from club to club, so check the youngest age a Kids class accepts before you book.

Who it's for

Children and teenagers: the Dubai Marina timetable has separate Kids Muay-Thai and Teens Muay-Thai classes. The exact age bands for each group are not published, so ask the provider. Beginners are welcome; the club says it trains all levels, from complete beginners to fighters. Most of the timetable is adult Muay Thai.

What to expect

The club says every class includes a warm-up, technique training, pad work and a cool-down, and its own photos show children in red academy T-shirts and Muay Thai shorts working on the bags with a coach. The Kids Muay-Thai class runs at 4:30PM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Marina branch. The website offers a free day pass through a sign-up form ("no commitment required, try all classes"); ask whether it covers the kids' classes. What to wear, whether gloves and shin guards are provided, and class length are not published: ask the provider.
