The activity

Roller Skating, explained

Roller skating classes teach children balance, coordination and confidence on wheels. Beginners start with the basics - standing, gliding, stopping and simple turns - usually through games, then move on to edges, crossovers and small jumps. From there, skaters can branch into figure skating (spins, jumps and routines), speed skating or freestyle. Rollball is a team game played on roller skates: players pass, bounce and shoot a ball by hand into a goal, so it adds ball skills, teamwork and match play to skating. Skating classes often take children from about age 3, with team games starting a little later once children are steady on their skates.

Who it's for

Children and young athletes at every level: the website sorts its programmes as Beginners, Intermediate or Advanced rather than by age. Tiny Tots is described as a class for toddlers, and Learn to Skate builds on it; Rollball Fundamentals is the entry point for rollball. The site doesn't give age groups for its programmes - ask the provider which class suits your child. The academy says its programmes suit all ages and skill levels; separate girls' groups or special-needs support aren't mentioned - ask the provider.

What to expect

The website describes the beginner programmes in some detail. Tiny Tots is built around playful activities, games and songs, with coaches introducing balance, gliding, stopping, forward and backward skating and simple turns, and each child moving at their own pace. Learn to Skate follows on with structured lessons in starting, stopping, turning and gliding, then edging, crossovers and basic jumps. Rollball Fundamentals mixes skating with passing, shooting and receiving, plus mini-games. The site doesn't say what kit to bring, whether skates and protective gear can be borrowed, or whether a trial is offered - ask the provider before the first session.
