The activity

Dance, explained

Dance and music classes for children usually mix technique with plenty of movement and listening. In dance, younger children often start with rhythm, coordination and simple steps before moving on to a particular style such as ballet or hip-hop. Music lessons, whether singing or an instrument, tend to begin with pulse, pitch and listening games, then build reading and playing skills week by week. Along the way children develop coordination, memory, concentration and the confidence to try something new in front of others. Styles, starting ages and class formats vary a lot from one school to the next, so it is worth asking what is taught and how classes are grouped before signing up.
