The activity
Music Lessons, explained
Music lessons teach a child to play an instrument or sing, usually one-to-one or in a small group, working from rhythm and reading music up to full pieces. Popular first instruments for children include piano, keyboard, guitar and drums, while singing lessons work on breathing, pitch and confidence. Lessons are usually weekly, with short practice at home in between, and progress builds steadily over months rather than weeks. Some schools prepare students for graded exams from boards such as Trinity College London, which gives a clear ladder of goals. Along the way children build focus, patience, coordination and the confidence to perform in front of others.
Who it's for
Kids, teenagers and adults, from complete beginners to advanced students. Guitar and drum lessons take children from around 4 years old and piano from around 5; no prior experience is needed. The school also runs a free music classes initiative for passionate learners who can't afford regular lessons - ask reception about eligibility.
What to expect
New students start with a free assessment so they begin at the right level. Lessons are offered as group or private classes, and a piano lesson lasts one hour, with weekly lessons suggested for steady progress. The studio provides the equipment, including guitars, amps and picks for guitar lessons, so children can just turn up and play. Drum teachers can teach evenings and weekends, and online lessons are also available. Fees and class times aren't published - ask the provider when you book.
