About SIP Abacus - Deira

SIP Abacus Deira is the centre listed on SIP Abacus's UAE website, in Sherina Plaza 2 opposite One Deira Mall. SIP Abacus began in Malaysia in 1999 and is part of SIP Academy India. The centre's Instagram currently says its classes are for kids aged 5 to 12, while the UAE website says the programme is designed for ages 6 to 12, so ask about 5-year-olds. According to the UAE website, children in Grade 1 or Grade 2 (ages 6-8) join the Junior module, which covers the basics of the abacus and times tables from 2 to 9, and children in Grade 3 and above (ages 8-12) work through the Foundation, Advanced and Grand Master modules - 11 levels in all, each lasting 13 to 16 weeks. The site describes classes twice a week for 1 hour 30 minutes, with up to 15 children per class, no homework and a certificate per level; confirm the Deira timetable when you book. Classes run online and in the classroom, and a free trial class can be booked online in either mode.

The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus classes teach children mental arithmetic with a bead counting frame. Children first move the beads to add, subtract, multiply and divide, then learn to picture the abacus in their head and do the same sums mentally. Alongside speed with numbers, the aim is better concentration, visual memory and listening, since many exercises are read aloud as dictation. Programmes run in graded levels, and children move up as they complete each one. Starting ages vary between programmes: SIP Abacus's UAE Instagram says 5 to 12, and its website describes a Junior module for children in Grade 1 or Grade 2.

Who it's for

Children aged 5 to 12, according to the centre's Instagram; the UAE website gives 6 to 12, so ask about 5-year-olds. The website's Junior module is for ages 6-8 (children in Grade 1 or Grade 2); the Foundation, Advanced and Grand Master modules are for ages 8-12 (Grades 3 to 7). The FAQ says the programme suits children who are already good at maths as well as those who find numbers hard. Support for special needs isn't mentioned - ask the provider.

What to expect

Start with the free trial class, booked through the form on the SIP Abacus UAE site, where you choose online or in-person and pick a date and time slot (Dubai time). SIP Abacus's UAE site says regular classes run twice a week for 1 hour 30 minutes, in groups of up to 15 (10 to 15 in the Junior module); confirm the Deira timetable and group size when you book. Children calculate on a physical abacus first, then learn to visualise the beads and work sums out mentally; the FAQ says training also includes Brain Gym and speed-writing exercises. There's no homework, and a certificate is awarded at the end of each level. The site doesn't say what to bring or which days classes run in Deira, so ask when you book.
