About mathello Abacus Intelligence
mathello Abacus Intelligence teaches abacus and mental arithmetic to primary-age children at its Umm Hurair centre, near Burjuman Metro Exit 1. The programme is for children from senior KG to grade 6 (ages 5-13 on its programme page) and uses what mathello calls the MIT technique - Middle, Index and Thumb - moving the beads with six fingers across both hands. Children work through eight or nine levels over roughly 26-27 months of learning, with an assessment at the end of each level: to move up, a child needs 70-80% accuracy with speed. Abacus, explained
Abacus and mental arithmetic classes teach children to calculate by moving beads on a physical abacus, then gradually to picture the abacus in their head and work sums mentally. Children work through a levelled syllabus, practising drills that build number sense, concentration, memory and calculation speed. Progress is usually checked with a test at the end of each level, and some programmes add grading exams and competitions. Most programmes start around kindergarten age, once a child recognises numbers and can follow short, structured tasks, and run through the primary years.
