Seibukan Karate Academy: traditional karate in JLT
About Seibukan Karate Academy
Seibukan Karate Academy is the Jumeirah Lakes Towers dojo of United Karate Group International, a UAE martial arts group that says it was established in 1979. The group has dojos in Dubai (JLT, Karama, Abu Hail and more), Sharjah, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah. The style is traditional Okinawan karate: the group's lineage page names it Shorin Ryu Seibukan Karate-do and traces it back to Zenryo Shimabukuro, who built the Seibukan dojo in Okinawa in 1962. The group also teaches Kobudo (Okinawan weapons), Aikido and Muay Thai, but it does not say which of these run at each branch. It says it trains people of all ages. Children's class times, age groups and fees are not published for any branch, so a call to the branch you pick is the way to find out whether there is a kids' class that fits your child.
The activity
Martial Arts, explained
Karate is a martial art that grew up on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Students learn blocks, punches, kicks and stances, then string them together in kata, set sequences of moves practised again and again until they flow. Classes usually open with a bow and a warm-up, move on to basics and kata, and in many clubs include some controlled partner work. Progress is marked by coloured belts, earned at gradings. For children, the appeal is the structure: listening to the instructor, taking turns, remembering sequences and working towards the next belt. It also builds balance, coordination, flexibility and confidence. Starting ages vary from club to club, so ask the dojo which class suits your child.
Who it's for
The group says its martial arts training is for people of all ages and skill levels. It does not publish age groups, levels or separate children's classes for any branch, so ask the branch you pick whether there is a kids' class and from what age. Nothing is published on girls-only classes or support for children with additional needs.
What to expect
Expect traditional Okinawan karate in the Shorin Ryu Seibukan style, where training is built around basics, kata and belt gradings. The branches do not publish class length, weekly times, group sizes, uniform requirements or whether a trial class is offered, so ask before your first visit. Each branch has its own phone number: pick a branch on this page to see how to reach it.
