The activity

Playgroup, explained

A playgroup gives young children a chance to play, socialise and try simple activities such as songs, crafts, stories and sensory play alongside other children their age, often with a parent or carer close by. For many toddlers it is the first group setting before nursery, and the focus is on social skills, language and confidence rather than formal lessons. Educational playgroups add a little more structure, with themed activities planned around early learning. Formats, session lengths and age bands differ a lot from one playgroup to the next, so it is worth asking how a typical session runs before you go.
