About Ocean Warriors Life Saving Club

Ocean Warriors is a surf lifesaving club that trains children on the beach in Jumeirah. Founded in 2023, it describes itself as the first Surf Life Saving GB club outside the UK and the only Royal Life Saving Society UK-accredited club in the UAE. Groups run by age: WaterBabies for 3-4 year olds (with a parent by their side), Nippers for 5-13 and Juniors for 13-18, and there is an adult squad too. Training covers beach flags, sprints and relays, 1km runs, surf swims, run-swim-run, bodyboarding, Malibu board and surfski paddling, and first aid. It is not a learn-to-swim programme: every child passes a swim test first. Sessions are on Friday afternoons and Saturday and Sunday mornings, in terms, and the club says it typically provides the equipment. Older members can work towards UK-recognised awards, and at 16 the club says they can take a Beach Lifeguard Award. The club is currently training at the northern end of Jumeirah 4 Beach while its usual beach is redeveloped.

The activity

Lifesaving, explained

Surf lifesaving (often called Nippers for younger children) teaches kids to be safe, confident and useful at the beach. Sessions mix running races on the sand, such as beach flags and sprints, with sea swims out to a buoy, bodyboarding and paddling boards through small waves, plus basic first aid and rescue skills. It builds stamina, teamwork and a real respect for the sea, and older children can work towards recognised lifesaving and lifeguard awards. It is not a learn-to-swim class: children usually need to swim a set distance before they start, and clubs often take them from about four or five years old.

Who it's for

Children aged 3-18 who can already swim, plus adults. WaterBabies (ages 3-4) do beach play and water confidence with a parent alongside; Nippers (5-13) learn surf lifesaving skills and ocean safety; Juniors (13-18) move on to advanced first aid, rescue techniques and competition skills. Swim test before joining: 25m for ages 4-7, 50m for 8-11 and 100m for 12-18, in a pool or open water. Rookie Lifeguard (ages 8-12) and National Lifesaving Academy (12+) courses are offered to schools and community groups. Homeschool sessions are available on request.

What to expect

Start with a free trial session on the beach (Friday 4:30-5:30pm, or Saturday or Sunday 7:30-8:30am), booked through the club's online form with your child's date of birth and health details. The swim test can be done at the trial or first session. Sessions last an hour and mix beach running games like flags and sprints with sea swimming, bodyboarding and board paddling, with coaches and a water safety team in the water. The club says it typically provides the training equipment, such as boards and rescue kit. After joining, members get a uniform: UV50 rash vest, UV50 shorts, skull cap and backpack. Showers and changing rooms are by Kite Beach Parking. For what to bring to the trial, ask the provider.
