About OAKS Swimming Training

OAKS (One of A Kind Swimming Training) runs a swimming programme at Dubai English Speaking College in Academic City, taking swimmers from complete beginner to competitive squad level. Learn to Swim follows the basis of the British ASA pathway across six levels (1, 2, 3, 4, 4+ and 5), starting with core aquatic skills, water confidence and pool safety and building towards all four strokes. Groups are small: three children per class at level 1, rising to eight at level 5. Swimmers ready to race move into a squad pathway built on the Long Term Athlete Development framework, from Skills and Development squads up to Competition and two Performance squads, which add strength sessions in the gym. OAKS was started in 2017 by Head Coach Monir Kassem, and the club says many of its swimmers have gone on to compete and hold records at national and international level. Its Instagram says classes start from age 3. Fees are listed on oaks.ae per 20-week term (2023 tables, so confirm prices), and the website offers a free consultation.

The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons teach children water confidence and technique in progressive stages, moving from getting comfortable in the water to full stroke work and, for stronger swimmers, competitive squad training. Kids build core aquatic safety skills first - floating, breathing, submerging - before moving on to front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. It is a life-saving skill as much as a sport, and it builds fitness, coordination and confidence. Beginners usually start in small learn-to-swim groups, and competitive squad training comes once a child can already swim confidently and wants to race.

Who it's for

Children from age 3 (the club's Instagram says classes start at 3+) through to competitive swimmers: Learn to Swim levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 4+ and 5, then the squad pathway (Skills, Development, Competition, Performance B, Performance A). The club says it welcomes swimmers of all abilities, backgrounds and age groups. No upper age limit, boys/girls split or special needs provision is published - ask the provider.

What to expect

Learn to Swim classes last 30 minutes at levels 1-4 and 45 minutes at levels 4+ and 5, with three children per class at level 1 rising to eight at level 5. Early levels focus on fun sessions: getting used to the water, breathing practice, controlled movement and safety around the pool. Squad sessions last 60 minutes (Skills, Development), 90 minutes (Competition), 90-120 minutes (Performance B) or 120 minutes (Performance A). The website offers a free consultation through its contact form; what to bring and any trial session - ask the provider.
