About IQ007
IQ007 is the Dubai centre of a network of learning centres, teaching from an office in Indigo Tower, JLT. Its mental arithmetic course is built on the abacus: younger children start with numbers, shapes and single-digit counting on the beads, then move on to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing two- and three-digit numbers, and finally to working sums in their heads. The English site lists it from age 4, as 72 lessons at two to three sessions a week. The centre also runs speed reading (from 4), a literacy and handwriting course (spelling, punctuation and calligraphy, taught in Russian; the English site calls it Creative Writing, from 6), English for children in mini-groups, and Growing Minds, a development programme from 2.5 years with Russian-speaking educators. Separately, a Russian-curriculum primary programme (School of Russia, grades 1-4, ages 6-11) runs in school hours, Monday to Friday mornings, usually 9AM-12:10PM. The first lesson is free. Fees are not published on the site.
The activity
Abacus, explained
Mental arithmetic starts on the abacus, a frame of beads where each rod stands for ones, tens, hundreds and so on. Children first learn to add and subtract by moving the beads with their fingers, then gradually picture the abacus in their heads and do the same sums without touching it. Parents usually choose it to build number confidence, concentration and working memory alongside school maths. Classes tend to mix bead work, worksheets and quick-fire mental sums, and many centres take children from around four or five, once they know their numbers to ten and can sit at a table for a lesson.
Who it's for
Mental arithmetic and speed reading: children from 4 years (the courses also take adults). Literacy and handwriting (called Creative Writing on the English site, taught in Russian): from 6 years. Russian-curriculum primary programme: grades 1-4, ages 6 to 11, held on weekday mornings in place of regular school hours. Growing Minds development programme: from 2.5 years. English: children at any level, from beginners up. Much of the site is in Russian and the Growing Minds educators are described as Russian-speaking, so it will particularly suit Russian-speaking families, though English is taught to all.
What to expect
The first lesson is free: the centre describes it as a chance to meet a teacher, see the school and its method, find out how interested your child is and where their strengths lie, and plan lessons from there. For English, the trial is taken with your child's future teacher rather than a sales manager. The mental arithmetic course runs as 72 lessons, two to three times a week. For English, groups are capped at six and classes last 60-90 minutes. Lesson length and group size for mental arithmetic, and what to bring, are not published: ask the provider when you book the trial.
