The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus classes teach children to do sums with a bead frame, then to picture that frame in their heads and calculate without it, which is usually called mental arithmetic. Children start by adding and subtracting with their fingers on the beads, and later levels bring in bigger numbers, multiplication and division. Classes mix bead work with short timed drills and worksheets, and a few minutes of practice at home between sessions helps children move up. Parents usually choose it to build number confidence, concentration, memory and speed with maths. Programmes run in graded levels and many centres take children from around age 4 or 5, so ask where your child would start.

Who it's for

Children aged 4 to 16, according to the institute's website, which describes its programmes as covering early learners, school-age children and teens. Abacus is taught in levels, and the institute's own guide says older children who are new to the abacus can start from the first level too. Kidz Kingdom, its prep preschool programme, is for ages 2 to 5 and covers letter recognition, sound awareness and early reading. Ask which programme and level would suit your child.

You can request a free consultation or book a visit through the website, call +971 55 225 5691, or use the website's WhatsApp button, which goes to +971 58 582 5466. In UCMAS abacus, children first work sums on a physical abacus, then gradually picture it in their heads and calculate mentally, moving to the next level when they are ready. The institute's guide suggests a few minutes of practice a day at home between classes. Most programmes run in three-month cycles, at the centre or online. Class length, group size, fees and whether there is a trial class are not published, so ask when you get in touch.
