The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus classes teach children mental arithmetic with a traditional bead frame. Children first learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide by moving the beads, then practise picturing the frame in their head so they can calculate without it. Regular practice builds number sense, concentration, speed and accuracy, and many children enjoy the timed drills and competitions that come with it. Courses usually run in levels, with a certificate or test at the end of each one, so progress is easy to see. Most children start at around five or six, once they recognise numbers confidently, and move up the levels over several years.

Who it's for

Children, in programme age bands set by the centre: abacus for 4 years and above (Elementary levels for 5-8 year olds, Regular levels for 8-13 year olds, then Grand Master levels); Vedic maths for 8 years and above; handwriting for 5 years and above (Sub Junior 5-6, Junior 7-9, Senior 9+); art and craft for 4-13 year olds. Coaching classes cover all subjects to Grade 4, science and social science to Grade 8 and maths to Grade 12. Online abacus and Vedic maths classes are offered for children who cannot attend in person.

What to expect
