The activity

Guitar, explained

Guitar is one of the friendliest instruments to start on. In early lessons children learn to hold the guitar and pick comfortably, find their first chords and switch between them, and strum simple rhythms along to songs they already know. Over time they add finger-picking, reading chord charts or notation, and playing with other people. Along the way it builds fine motor control, coordination between two hands, listening, patience and the confidence of playing for others. Many children start around six or seven on a smaller-sized guitar, once their hands can press the strings; younger children often begin with general music and movement classes first.

Who it's for

Students of all ages and any level of experience, from beginners to advanced players, according to the school. Young children have a dedicated Early Childhood Music and Movement programme; group classes are listed for kids, teens and adults. Exact age bands are not published, so ask the provider which class suits your child.

What to expect

Private lessons are one-to-one, with a lesson plan set around your child's level, pace and goals, and a choice of 30, 45 or 60 minutes for piano. Early childhood sessions use songs, instruments, games, movement and guided activities. The website does not describe a trial lesson, what to bring or whether an instrument is provided for lessons, so ask the provider about these when you get in touch.
