About Dubai Youth Olympic School of Rhythmic Gymnastics

Dubai Youth Olympic School of Rhythmic Gymnastics, which also goes by UAE Gymnastics, is a girls-only rhythmic gymnastics club based at Al Safa Horizon School on 49th Street, in the Al Wasl area. It is owned by two UAE nationals, Tariq Malallah and Malak Alfarsi, and says its aim is to grow the sport in the UAE and help form a national team. Training is grouped by age: Beginner for 3-6 years, Pre Junior for 7-10 and Junior for 11-16, and the site also lists a Baby Group, Novice, and International Junior & Senior classes. The club covers both first steps and competitive, high-performance training. In 2022 it organised the GCC Grand Series of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Dubai with Dubai Sports Council, and one of its gymnasts, Lamia Tariq Malallah, received the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award in 2019. If you're curious, ring the school and ask to watch an observation class with your daughter first.

The activity

Gymnastics, explained

Rhythmic gymnastics mixes ballet, dance and gymnastics, performed to music on a soft carpet rather than on bars or a beam. Gymnasts work with a small piece of kit - a hoop, ball, ribbon, clubs or rope - throwing, rolling and catching it while they leap, turn and balance. Early classes focus on posture, stretching, basic jumps and getting used to the apparatus; later come full routines and, for those who want it, competitions. It builds flexibility, balance, co-ordination and a strong sense of rhythm. Many clubs take girls from about three, with a playful beginner group before more structured training.

Who it's for

Girls only. The site lists age groups of 3-6 years (Beginner), 7-10 years (Pre Junior) and 11-16 years (Junior), plus Baby Group, Novice and International Junior & Senior classes. It covers beginners as well as girls training to compete. For a baby group age or special needs support, ask the provider.

What to expect

The school invites new families to an observation class: call and they will arrange for you and your daughter to come and watch. Classes are run by age group, starting with the Beginner group for 3-6 year olds. The club describes its programmes as progressive and safe, teaching correct technique from the right posture through to flexibility work. One parent quoted on the site mentions being invited once a term to see their child's progress. Google lists the club as appointment-only and says membership is required. For kit, class length, the weekly timetable and fees, ask the provider.
