About Dubai Astronomy Group

Dubai Astronomy Group is a CDA-licensed non-profit astronomy organisation that has run stargazing and space events in the UAE since 2000. Families come for its guided evenings: planet-watching nights, full-moon events and planetarium shows at the SEE Institute in The Sustainable City, and late meteor-shower nights in the Al Qudra desert, where astronomers help you find your way around the sky and set up professional telescopes. The autumn 2026 calendar includes Saturn at opposition, the Orionids, the Leonids, two nights of the Geminids near Al Khatim in Abu Dhabi, and a movie night showing The Martian. Children under 13 have their own ticket and come with a ticketed parent. The group also runs space programmes for schools, astronomy and astrophotography courses, and a paid membership that gives discounts on events. It is rated 4.5 on Google from 95 reviews. There is no drop-in centre: you book each event online and the exact meeting pin comes by email.

The activity

Astronomy & Space, explained

Astronomy for children starts with simply looking up: finding the Moon, a bright planet or a meteor streaking across a dark sky. At a stargazing night an astronomer points out constellations and planets, then children take turns at a telescope to see Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons or craters on the Moon. Planetarium shows bring the night sky indoors, and some sessions add talks, quizzes or hands-on crafts. It feeds curiosity, patience and a feel for science and maths, and it is something a family can share. Young children can enjoy it too, especially when the evening does not run too late.

Who it's for

Families and anyone curious about the sky. The group's FAQ says events suit children aged 5 and above. On its event pages, children under 13 buy a Kids ticket and must be accompanied by a ticketed parent; under-5s go free with a ticketed adult, though the group says this is not recommended. The Saturn Opposition night is billed as all ages welcome. School programmes are booked by schools, with age bands from 5-10 up to 15+ depending on the programme.

What to expect

A city-edge evening at the SEE Institute (for example Saturn Opposition, 7PM to 9PM) combines a short astronomy talk, a Q&A with an astronomer, a planetarium show and guided viewing through professional telescopes. Desert meteor nights run late, from 10PM to 2AM, in Al Qudra; seating, water, snacks and hot drinks are included, you can take phone photos through the telescopes, and no 4x4 is needed. Wear closed shoes and bring jackets or extra layers. Show the QR code from your ticket email at check-in. If the weather looks uncertain beforehand, the group reschedules and tells everyone registered.
