Desert Sports is a Dubai multi-sport community that began in 2023 when a few friends started playing floorball, and it now runs sessions in a dozen sports for Dubai's expat community. For children there are two youth academies, both held at North London Collegiate School (NLCS). The Floorball Youth Academy is for boys and girls, with a weekly Sunday morning session, drop-in or term pass. Floorball is a hockey-style game with light sticks and a plastic ball and no body contact, and the club provides the sticks, balls and vests. The Lacrosse Youth Academy, which the club describes as Dubai's first youth lacrosse programme, is for ages 10 to 15 on Sunday evenings, with beginners' drills and a more tactical group for players with some experience. No experience is needed for either. Co-founder Pavel grew up in Sweden, where floorball began. For floorball, families register interest through a form on the academy page; for lacrosse, they join the parents' WhatsApp group linked on the lacrosse academy page.

The activity

Floorball, explained

Floorball is an indoor team sport that looks like hockey but is lighter and gentler. Players use a lightweight plastic stick and a small plastic ball with holes in it, there are no skates, and body contact is not part of the game, so children do not need pads or heavy kit. A session usually mixes stick-handling, passing and shooting drills with small games, so kids are moving almost the whole time. It builds hand-eye coordination, footwork, stamina and teamwork, and because the kit is simple, beginners can join in quickly. Many children start around six or seven, once they can run and handle a stick with confidence.

Who it's for

Floorball Youth Academy: boys and girls; the academy page headline says ages 7-16, while its text says 6 to 16, so check your child's age with the club. Lacrosse Youth Academy: ages 10-15. Both welcome complete beginners; the lacrosse academy also has a development group for players who have finished the beginners' programme or have some experience.

What to expect

The youth floorball academy runs weekly coached sessions focused on skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship. The club provides sticks, balls and vests; children should wear comfortable sportswear and indoor sports shoes. The kids' floorball session runs on Sunday from 10AM to 11AM. Lacrosse starts with low-pressure skill drills, then small-sided games so everyone gets the ball, and runs on Sundays at 6PM. A single floorball drop-in is listed at AED 130, so a child can try one session before committing to a term; confirm the current fee when you register. Free trial sessions are not published; ask the club.
