Ballet from age 2: Me & Mummy (2-3), Baby Ballet (3-4), Pre Ballet (5-7), Foundation (7-10) and Intermediate (ages 11+ and adults). Which groups run depends on the studio, so check your branch's timetable.

Ballet, explained

Ballet builds posture, flexibility, balance and musicality through structured movement at the barre and in the centre of the room. The youngest children usually start with playful, music-led classes, often with a parent alongside, that introduce basic positions, balance and moving in time to music. As they grow, lessons become more formal: barre work, stretching, centre practice and short sequences of choreography, building strength and control step by step. Older, more experienced dancers may go on to pointe work once their teacher judges them ready. Along the way children learn to listen, focus and remember sequences, and many find their confidence grows with it.

Who it's for

Children from age 2 (Me & Mummy, ages 2-3, with a parent) through Baby Ballet (3-4), Pre Ballet (5-7), Foundation (7-10) and Intermediate (ages 11+ and adults). The school markets its classes to girls; if you have a son, ask the provider. Acro Ballet (3-7), Ballet Fusion (7-16) and Adult Ballet Barre are on the programme list at some studios, so ask which your branch runs.
