About CAP Tennis Academy

CAP Tennis Academy (its website also calls it CAP Sport Academy) coaches tennis for children and adults at hotel and school courts across Dubai, from Al Barsha South and Al Safa to Downtown and Bur Dubai, plus Abu Dhabi. For Al Barsha South, its website lists two school venues: GEMS Founders School and Nord Anglia International School. Junior group lessons are split by age and ball colour: Red Ball for ages 4-7, Orange Ball for 7-10, Green Ball for 10-12, and a Junior Advance programme for players over 12 who are getting ready for tournaments. The academy's FAQ says children can start as early as 3 to 4, and groups are matched by age and ability, so siblings may end up in different groups. Prices are published as starting points: group sessions from AED 120 per player, semi-private from AED 170 per player and private lessons from AED 300 per session. Final fees depend on the coach, venue and time slot. The academy says it is affiliated to the UAE Tennis Federation.

The activity

Tennis, explained

Tennis is a racquet sport played one-on-one or in doubles across a net. Young children usually start on a smaller court with softer, slower balls: red balls for the youngest, then orange, then green as they move to a full-size court, before playing with the standard yellow ball. Along the way they learn the basic strokes, serving, rallying, footwork and how to score a game. Tennis builds hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, and match play teaches focus, patience and how to handle winning and losing. Children can take group lessons with others of a similar age and level, or private and semi-private lessons for more one-to-one attention.

Who it's for

Children from about 3-4 upwards, from complete beginners to juniors preparing for tournaments. Junior groups run as Red Ball (ages 4-7, beginner), Orange Ball (7-10, intermediate), Green Ball (10-12, advanced intermediate) and Junior Advance (12+). No previous tennis experience is needed. Adults are catered for too, with adult group lessons, Ladies Mornings and corporate evening sessions, so a parent can play as well. Ask the branch you pick which of these run there.

What to expect

Junior group sessions are grouped by age and level. Coaches work on footwork, coordination, technique and game awareness, with younger players using slower red and orange balls before moving to a full-size court with green balls. The academy says class length varies by coach, venue and level, typically from about 30 minutes to two hours, so ask what applies to your child's group. Dress your child in comfortable clothes and pack tennis or running shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat. The website has a 'Book Trial Lesson' button, but the trial price and format are not published - ask when you book. Private and semi-private lessons are also available.
