About Brainobrain

Brainobrain teaches abacus-based mental arithmetic to children aged 4 to 14, alongside what it calls "Advanced Abacus Learning and NLP activities". Course content also covers memory, concentration, vocabulary and spelling, and creative art and story writing. It has centres across Dubai, from Dubai Investment Park to Karama and Dubai Silicon Oasis, plus Sharjah and Ajman; pick a centre on this page for its address, hours and contact. There are two courses: LittleBobs for 4-6-year-olds (6 modules, each 3 months) and the main Brainobrain course for 7-14-year-olds (10 levels, each 3 months). Children attend a 2-hour class once a week and are expected to do 15 minutes of abacus practice at home every day, and Brainobrain says batches are capped at 15 children. You can book a free trial class through the website. Fees are not published, so ask your centre.

The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus classes teach children mental arithmetic with a bead counting frame. Kids first learn to add and subtract by moving beads, then gradually picture the abacus in their head and do the same sums mentally, without the frame or a calculator. Progress runs through structured levels, each building speed and accuracy, and it depends on short daily practice at home as well as the weekly class, because the visualisation skill takes repetition to settle. Centres also pitch it as training for concentration, memory and listening, not just maths. Many programmes take children from about age 4 with a simpler introductory stage, then run a longer multi-level course through the primary and early secondary years.

Who it's for

Children aged 4-6 (LittleBobs) and 7-14 (the main 10-level Brainobrain course), per brainobrain.ae. Batches are capped at 15 children. Nothing is published about ability levels or support for additional needs: ask the centre you pick.

What to expect

Brainobrain's site offers a free trial class, booked through its enquiry form (brainobrain.ae/enquiry.html) or by phoning a centre. Once enrolled, your child attends one 2-hour class a week in a batch of up to 15 children, and is expected to practise on the abacus at home for 15 minutes every day with exercises set by the teacher. Brainobrain says parents play a part in supporting that daily practice. Each level or module lasts 3 months. The site doesn't say what to bring to a trial, whether you buy the abacus and books separately, or what each centre's batch times are, so ask your centre.
