About ATIC Psychological & Counselling Center

ATIC Psychological & Counselling Center is a therapy clinic on Sheikh Zayed Road in Al Safa 1, in the Mardoof Building. It describes itself as a CDA and DHA-licensed polyclinic and early intervention centre, and says it was founded in Singapore in 2010 before opening in Dubai in 2014 under its director and founder, Dr Sara Powell. Art therapy runs through its work with children, and the clinic makes it a core part of its early intervention service. For families, the services are child and adolescent therapy for young people up to 18, using art, play and communication; early intervention and development for children aged 0-5, including developmental assessments; and speech and language therapy. It also offers family therapy and online sessions through its virtual clinic. The team includes psychologists, art therapists and speech and occupational therapists. This is clinical support, booked by appointment after an introductory call, rather than a class or club to drop into.

The activity

Creative & Play Therapy, explained

Art and play therapy are forms of psychotherapy, not art or play classes. With a trained therapist, a child uses drawing, painting, modelling, toys and play to show feelings they may not be able to put into words. The focus is on the process of making, not on producing a nice picture, so no artistic skill is needed. Parents usually look into it when a child is struggling with anxiety, big emotions, behaviour, a change at home or school, or a developmental concern. It can suit very young children as well as teenagers, and it usually begins with a consultation and assessment so the therapist can set goals with the family.

Who it's for

Children and young people up to 18 (child and adolescent therapy) and children aged 0-5 (early intervention and development), plus their families. The clinic lists concerns such as anxiety, anger, low confidence, concentration and academic difficulties, communication and speech, sensory and fine motor skills, infant feeding and bonding, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder (from 18 months). For children under 5, it uses a developmental assessment that it says is predictive of later language and social communication difficulties, including autism spectrum disorder.

What to expect

Everything starts with getting in touch: the clinic offers an introductory call with one of its support representatives to talk about availability and preferences and match your child with a suitable therapist. Depending on age and needs, children may have assessments and be seen individually, with their family or in groups. For under-5s the approach draws on expressive therapies (art, play, music and movement). Art therapy needs no artistic skill: the clinic says the process of making art matters more than the end result. Sessions must be booked in advance and depend on availability. Session length, fees and insurance: ask the provider.
