About Al kass Ceramics
Al Kass Ceramics is a community pottery studio at 133 Al Rasaas Rd in Al Quoz Industrial Area 2, open since August 2020 and welcoming adults and children. For kids there are three bookable formats, each with its own age band: ceramic painting for 6-12 year olds at AED 150, hand building for 6-15 year olds at AED 190, and wheel throwing on the potter's wheel for 11-15 year olds at AED 190. Hand building covers pinching, coiling and slab work, and the studio says all tools and materials are included. Wheel throwing classes teach children to shape bowls, cups and other forms from scratch with instructor guidance. For birthdays and groups, private event classes run for 2-3 hours for at least four people, from age 7, at AED 260 per person. The studio also sells clay and glazes in-studio and online, so keen young potters can carry on at home.
The activity
Pottery, explained
Pottery lets kids work with real clay, and there are three common ways in. Ceramic painting is the gentlest: children decorate ready-made pieces with colour and glaze. Hand building uses pinching, coiling and slab techniques to shape figures, bowls and decorative pieces at a table. Wheel throwing is the most technical, centring clay on a spinning potter's wheel and pulling it up into cups and bowls. Along the way kids build hand-eye coordination, patience and focus, and they take home something they made themselves. Pieces usually need drying and firing, so finished work is often collected a few weeks later. Painting and hand building suit younger children; the wheel tends to come later.
Who it's for
Children by programme, as the studio lists them: ceramic painting 6-12 years (booked as 6-8 or 9-12), hand building 6-15 years, wheel throwing 11-15 years. Private event classes take participants from age 7. Adult classes run separately.
What to expect
Book a specific kids' class online and pick the format that fits your child's age. Hand building uses pinching, coiling and slab techniques, with all tools and materials included; wheel throwing has children shaping bowls and cups on the wheel with an instructor; ceramic painting means decorating pottery with colour. The studio's FAQ says most sessions are designed for beginners, with instructors guiding step by step. Kids' session length, start times and whether a trial is offered aren't published - ask the provider. If you need to move a class, reschedule 1-2 days ahead; only one reschedule is allowed.
