About Al Habtoor Polo Club

Al Habtoor Polo Club is a large polo and equestrian community in Dubailand, with four polo fields, a Riding School, a Polo Academy and 520 stables. For families, the Riding School is the main draw: 45-minute group, semi-private and private lessons have their own child prices, and group lessons for children are AED 259. Younger riders can join the Pony Club, where the club says little ones learn to walk and trot alongside other parts of riding and horse care. There are 10-minute pony rides for a first taste, plus stable tours and stable management sessions where children learn about looking after horses. Riders under 18 can also take polo lessons at the Polo Academy, which teaches everyone from complete beginners to established players. The Riding School has its own arena alongside two large floodlit arenas, and lessons run early in the morning and in the evening. The club describes its instructors as fully qualified professionals.

The activity

Polo, explained

Polo is played on horseback: two teams of four riders use long-handled mallets to hit a small ball along a grass field and into the opposing goal. A match is split into short periods called chukkas, with riders often changing horses between them. For children, polo starts with riding itself: learning to sit securely, steer and control a pony at walk, trot and canter, then practising swings with the mallet from the saddle, often called stick and ball, before joining practice games. It builds balance, coordination, confidence around big animals, teamwork and a real sense of responsibility for the horse. Most children come to polo after some ordinary riding lessons, and each club assesses new riders before placing them.

Who it's for

Children and adults, from new riders to experienced equestrians. The Riding School lists separate child and adult prices, and the Pony Club is aimed at young children starting out. The Polo Academy lists child prices for riders under 18 and teaches beginners through to established players. No minimum age is published for lessons, the Pony Club or pony rides, so ask the provider before booking for a young child. Nothing is published on special needs support: ask the provider.

What to expect

New riders can book an assessment lesson first (AED 359 for a child at the Riding School), and the Pony Club has its own assessment for new members (AED 299) plus a membership fee for new members (AED 399; ask the provider whether it renews). Lessons last 45 minutes. Riding helmets can be hired for AED 10. Payment is taken in full when you book and is non-refundable and non-transferable, and lesson bundles must be used within 3 months of purchase. For a gentler first step, a 10-minute pony ride is AED 79 for a child. Ask the provider what your child should wear and whether parents can watch from the arena side.
