About AIST educational center
AIST is a Russian-language educational centre run from two villas in Umm Suqeim 3, founded in 2015 by Alina Gilmanova. Its course pages are grouped by age: 3-4, 5-7 and 8-15. For the youngest, the 3-4 page is the AIST Academy, which the centre describes as an early-development programme for ages 3-6, with phonics, maths, languages, speech-therapist sessions, gymnastics, music and painting. For school-age children the list includes Russian reading and writing, English, French or Arabic, chess, music and vocal, painting and graphics, a children's business course called Business Fox Kids and the centre's own Global Mind course; maths and a musical are on the 8-15 list. The centre says its classes have 8 to 10 children, and Russian is taught from complete beginner up to B2, with level testing run with its academic partner, Herzen Pedagogical University in St Petersburg. It suits Russian-speaking families who want their children to keep reading and writing Russian while they study in English at school, and children starting Russian from zero. The centre offers a free consultation.
The activity
Russian, explained
Russian classes for children living abroad usually cover two groups: bilingual kids who speak Russian at home but read and write mostly in English, and children learning it from scratch. Lessons build reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, often through stories, songs and projects, so the language feels alive rather than a chore. For families it is also a way to keep grandparents, books and traditions within reach. Many centres start with pre-readers at 3 or 4 through sound and letter games, then move to proper literacy work from about 5, with older children working on grammar, literature and exam-style levels such as A1 to B2.
Who it's for
Children in three age bands on the centre's course pages: 3-4 (the AIST Academy, described as a programme for ages 3-6), 5-7 and 8-15. Russian reading and writing is for bilingual children who already speak Russian and for beginners starting from zero; Russian groups are formed by the child's school grade and school shift. The language courses (English, French, Arabic) take children and adults. Ask the provider about support for children with additional needs; speech therapists and a psychologist are on the team.
What to expect
The centre offers a free consultation with founder Alina Gilmanova. For Russian, the child's level is tested first so the centre can tell whether Russian is a second native language or a foreign one and place them in the right group. Music (piano and vocal) is one-to-one in 45 or 30 minute lessons, with a free 15-minute trial; lessons are booked with the centre's administrator and places are limited. Bring a music notebook; lessons can be cancelled only for a valid reason and with 24 hours' notice. Chess runs in a group twice a week or one-to-one, and parents get practice material after lessons. Ask the provider about days and times for the course you want.
