About A Learning Lab
A Learning Lab, run by UniHawk, builds career-exploration programmes for teenagers aged 13 to 18. The idea is simple: let teens try an industry before they commit to it. The core offer is a set of live, interactive virtual internships in 15 fields, from medicine, psychology and dentistry to AI, engineering, finance, law, marketing and architecture. Most batches run over six Saturdays, while some run as a six-day or weekend intensive, with at most 10 students per batch. Each internship costs 300 USD and needs no prior experience. Students work on real projects, hear from guest speakers and get career guidance. In Dubai, the in-person option currently open is Inside The Newsroom, a 5-day media immersion at Augustus Media in Dubai Production City from 12 to 16 October 2026, capped at 10 students. The team also runs leadership and tech bootcamps across the Gulf, delivered by mentors who are students, alumni or faculty of well-known universities. The site is clear that A Learning Lab is independent and not endorsed by those universities.
The activity
Leadership, explained
Career-exploration and leadership programmes give teenagers a taste of real working life before they choose subjects or a university course. Students work in small teams on a live brief, such as a business case, a tech product or a media campaign, and finish by presenting to a panel or an audience. Along the way they practise problem-solving, teamwork, public speaking and pitching, and they learn how an industry actually runs from the people who work in it. These programmes are usually built for secondary-school students from about 13, and no prior experience is expected, just curiosity and a willingness to speak up in a group.
Who it's for
Teenagers aged 13-18 (virtual internships, the Dubai media immersion and the 2026 Dubai bootcamps all state 13-18). No prior experience required. Not for younger children.
What to expect
Virtual internships are live, interactive online sessions of two hours: students work on actual projects, give live presentations, join guest-speaker Q&As and get career guidance. Batch patterns vary (six Saturdays, six days in a row or two weekends), so check the field's own page for dates and times. The Dubai media immersion runs Monday to Friday, 4PM to 6PM, at Augustus Media: day 1 is a tour of how the company is organised, then editorial decisions and news judgement, the media business model, building a campaign as a creative team, and on day 5 presenting it to a live audience. A laptop is mandatory and no meals are provided, so pack a snack. Trial sessions: ask the provider.
