The activity

Tennis, explained

Tennis coaching teaches children to move, judge a moving ball and control a racquet, starting with simple feeding and rallying drills before moving on to scoring, tactics and match play. Young beginners often start on smaller courts with lighter racquets and softer, slower balls so they can keep a rally going early on. As players improve, sessions add technical work on each stroke, footwork and fitness, and some children go on to club matches and junior tournaments. It builds coordination, concentration and the resilience of playing one-on-one. Many clubs take children from preschool age, so check the starting age with the coach before booking.

Who it's for

The academy says it trains all levels, from beginners to professional players, of all ages. At Downtown, the booking platform lists private (1:1) and semi-private (2:1) sessions for all skill levels; semi-private suits siblings or friends training together. No minimum starting age is published - ask the provider. For minors, a parent or guardian must be present or available during sessions as required by the academy.

What to expect

Downtown sessions on the booking platform last 60 minutes, either one player with one coach or two players sharing a coach, with drills tailored to each player. What a first session covers, whether racquets are provided and whether a trial is offered are not published - ask the provider. Under the academy's terms, fees are paid in advance, cancellations need at least 16 hours' notice or the session is charged, and parents must disclose any medical conditions or allergies and give emergency contact details for children at enrolment.
