About Mamalu Kitchen

Mamalu Kitchen is a cooking studio in the Depachika Food Hall at Nakheel Mall, in the centre of Palm Jumeirah. It was founded by Lama, a mum of three boys who grew up between Lebanon and the UK, under the slogan #feedingfamilies. The children's side is called Mini Chef: hands-on classes of one and a half hours with professional chefs, where kids cook a themed menu such as Little Italy (pasta from scratch in pomodoro sauce, margherita pizza) or Kung Fu Panda (California sushi rolls, chicken yakitori, stir-fried noodles, chocolate custard tart). Alongside the classic menus there are monthly specials, Mommy & Me sessions where a parent and child share a station, two-hour private birthday parties, a half-term camp and an After School Club for ages 4-12 and 13-17. Teenagers aged 12 to 17 also have their own course. Menus and per-person prices are listed on the booking pages, and the studio runs classes for adults and nannies too.

The activity

Cooking, explained

In a children's cooking class, kids work at their own station with a chef guiding them through a full menu: measuring, mixing, kneading dough, shaping, filling and baking, then plating up what they made. Along the way they practise following a recipe step by step, simple maths through weighing and counting, fine motor control, kitchen hygiene and safe handling of tools. Many children become more willing to taste new foods once they have cooked them. Classes are usually built around a theme or a cuisine, so each session feels different. Younger children often start with a parent beside them, then move on to cooking independently in a group as their confidence grows.

Who it's for

Children and families. Mini Chef covers kids' classes, Mommy & Me (a parent and child together), birthdays, camps and the After School Club, which has a Primary group for ages 4-12 and a Secondary group for ages 13-17. The Teenager Course is for teens aged 12 to 17. No minimum age is published for Mini Chef classic classes or the camp, so ask the provider. Separate Big Chef classes are for adults.

What to expect

A Mini Chef classic class lasts one and a half hours and is hands-on, led by professional chefs; each menu has two to four dishes, for example Funtastic (mixed berry babka, cheesy pizza bomb, chocolate chip marble cookies). In Mommy & Me, parent and child have their own station (AED 375 for the pair, AED 200 per extra participant). You book a menu, date and time slot online, and the studio is cashless, so pay online or by card on site. Per the booking policy, cancelling more than 48 hours ahead is free; within 48 hours there is no automatic refund. No free trial is published, and what to wear or bring is not stated, so ask the provider.
