The activity

Arts & Crafts, explained

Arts and crafts classes for little ones are hands-on sessions where children cut, stick, paint, colour and build something to take home. Along the way they practise the small hand movements that later help with holding a pencil and using scissors, learn to follow simple steps, and get to make their own choices about colour and design. Sessions for young children are usually short and guided by an adult, with plenty of mess allowed. Many children start around three, when they can sit at a table for a while and follow a grown-up's lead. The finished piece matters less than the fun of making it.
