The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Martial arts classes cover styles such as karate, kickboxing, kung fu and mixed martial arts: stances, strikes, blocks and set forms, building towards supervised sparring as students progress. Alongside fitness, the focus is on discipline, concentration and self-control, and many schools use belts or gradings to mark progress over months and years. Many schools run separate junior classes, so check with each one which ages it teaches and whether children train apart from adults. It tends to suit children who enjoy structure, clear goals and seeing their own progress.

Who it's for

Children from age 4 in Kids Karate; Kids Mixed Martial Arts is for kids and teens, and gymnastics is for children. Kung fu and MMA are listed for teens and adults, alongside adult karate, ladies-only karate and self-defence (with female instructors on request), yoga and Zumba. The summer and winter holiday camps are for children and youth.

What to expect

The first class is free. Book it by phone or WhatsApp, or through the enquiry form on the academy's website, which asks for the programme, your preferred venue and your child's age. Kids Karate works on coordination, self-control, concentration, confidence and patience, alongside stamina, strength and flexibility, and structured belt grading keeps children motivated. It runs in morning and evening batches. Kids Mixed Martial Arts blends striking, grappling and conditioning, scaled safely for children and taken further for teens. Ask the provider what your child should wear to the first class, which batches run at the Al Fahidi venue, and the fees.
