Tennis, explained

Junior tennis is usually taught in colour-coded ball stages. The youngest players start with Red Ball: bigger, slower, softer balls, smaller courts and shorter racquets, so they can rally from the first lesson. As control and footwork improve they move up to Orange, then Green, and finally the Yellow ball of the full-court game. Along the way kids learn the forehand, backhand, serve and volley, plus scoring and match play, and build coordination, balance and concentration. Children often start around age four, and most coaching is in small groups by age and level, with private lessons for extra focus.

Children from age 4, placed by ball stage: Red Ball (4 to 6), Orange Ball (6 to 8), Green Ball (8 to 10) and Yellow Ball (10 and over), from beginner to advanced.
