The activity
Badminton, explained
Badminton is a racquet sport played with a light shuttlecock over a high net. The shuttle slows down in the air, so young beginners can get it back over the net and enjoy real rallies early on. Children start with grip, footwork and basic shots such as the serve, clear and drop, then build up to longer rallies, singles and doubles games and, for keen players, matches. It develops hand-eye coordination, quick reactions, agility and fitness, and teaches kids to read an opponent. Many children start around five or six, once they can hold and swing a light junior racquet with some control.
Who it's for
The academy says it specialises in developing youth athletes and lists a Kids Training programme, as well as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels, a ladies' session and adults' training. Age ranges for the kids' groups aren't published - ask the provider.
What to expect
The website doesn't describe a first session. It has a 'Register now' form and lists phone, WhatsApp and email contacts. Before signing up, ask the academy which Al Quoz days and times suit your child's age and level, whether racquets and shuttles are provided or need to be brought, what a term costs and whether a trial session is possible.
