About Dubai International Art Centre

Dubai International Art Centre, known as DIAC, is a community art centre in a villa in Jumeirah 1, behind Magrudy's. It started in 1976 as the Art Society of Dubai, took its current name in 1995 and moved to its home near Mercato Mall in 2004. Most of the timetable is for adults, but children's courses run every week. The September 2026 term lists drawing and painting groups for ages 4-10, 4-12, 8-12 and 8-14, plus a mixed-age group, sculpture for kids and teens, English calligraphy and painting, manga drawing for 8-14 year olds, and hand embroidery. Most children's courses are 12 two-hour sessions for AED 1,800 + VAT, with materials included. Classes run on Saturday and Sunday daytimes and after school on Mondays and Tuesdays. The centre also has its own exhibition space, Gallery 76, and hosts art birthday parties for groups of ten or more children.

The activity

Drawing, explained

Children's drawing and painting classes teach kids to look closely and put what they see, or imagine, on paper and canvas. Over a course, children work through projects in pencil, paint and mixed media, picking up the building blocks of art: the colour wheel, warm and cool colours, light and shade, perspective and composition. Alongside the art itself, the practice builds observation, focus, fine motor control and the patience to finish a piece. Many studios start children at around four with playful, colourful projects, then move older children and teens on to more technical work such as portraits, manga or calligraphy. Materials are often supplied, so a first class needs little more than clothes that can get messy.

Who it's for

Children roughly 4 to 14. The September 2026 timetable names age bands for its drawing and painting groups: 4-10 years, 4-12 years, 8-12 years and 8-14 years, plus a mixed-age kids group; the manga course is for 8-14 year olds. Sculpture is listed for kids and teens, and the calligraphy course for kids, without set ages. Teens can also join the teens and adults courses. Special needs support is not mentioned; ask the centre.

What to expect

Each children's course is a block of sessions, usually 12, at the same time each week, and each timetabled kids session lasts two hours. Materials are provided, so children just turn up ready to get messy. Projects depend on the course: one drawing and painting course lists colour wheel challenges, warm and cool colours, monochrome, line art, collage, dot art, clay modelling and mixed media. You pay online by card; the course must start within a month of payment and finish within three months, with no refunds. No trial class is published, but if your child is unhappy after the first session, tell the office straight away and they will try to move you to another course.
