The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus training teaches kids to do arithmetic using a physical bead frame, then gradually to picture that frame in their head and calculate mentally without it - a skill called anzan. Sessions typically start with simple addition and subtraction on the physical abacus and build up to faster mental calculation over months of practice. Beyond faster maths, the method is popular for the side effects parents notice: better concentration, memory and listening skills, since progress depends on regular short bursts of home practice between classes. Most programmes group children by age, starting from around 5, and move them through graded levels as their speed and accuracy improve.

Who it's for

Children aged 5 to 15, split into three programmes by age: Junior (5-7), Junior Plus (8-10) and Regular (11-15). The centre's FAQ gives the suitable age range as 5 to 14/15 years.

What to expect

Start with the free demo session, which the centre uses to assess your child and answer parents' questions before you sign up. After that, classes run 2 hours a week (8 hours a month), either online or in person at the Al Qusais centre, and children move through the levels of their age programme, each lasting around 13-14 weeks. The FAQ is clear that home practice matters: parents are asked to make sure their child attends class and practises daily. Ask the provider what your child needs to bring and how class times are split across the week.
