The activity

Badminton, explained

Badminton is a fast indoor racket sport played with a light shuttlecock over a high net, either one against one or in pairs. Children start by learning how to hold the racket, move around the court and hit simple high and low shots, then build up to serving, rallying and playing proper games. It sharpens hand-eye coordination, footwork, speed and balance, and because the shuttle travels slower than a ball, beginners can enjoy real rallies quickly. Many children pick it up at primary school age, and it suits both kids who want a fun weekly activity and those keen to play in tournaments.

Who it's for

School children are the main focus, according to the website, which also offers badminton training for working professionals and batch groups at basic to intermediate level. Age groups for the kids' classes are not published - ask the provider.

What to expect

The website describes the kids' training as active, fun, physical-education-style sessions aimed at improving children's physical abilities and badminton performance. It doesn't describe a first session, a trial class, kit or what to bring - ask the provider before you go. The site's Book Now button links to the academy's page on the Playo app.
